Materials

Wooden artist’s mannequin (Ikea Gestalta)
Lace and gauze fabrics, yarn
Small piece of wire mesh

Instructions

Step 1

Apply a layer of black Heavy Gesso to the mannequin and its stand, then dry it with the heat gun.

Step 2

Cut a section of wire mesh to size and use it to make a frame which will hold up the skirt that you will put on your mannequin.

Step 3

During this stage you will decorate your mannequin. Start by mixing together some sculpture medium and some black gesso in a fairly large bowl.

Sculpture medium is water-based and can be used with fabrics to make them stiff and hard so that they hold their form once dry. If you want to use it with a small piece of fabric, you can apply a generous amount to the surface, using a large brush. You have to make sure that you use enough of the medium to soak right through the fabric. If you want to work with a larger piece of fabric, soak the whole thing in a container for a few minutes and use your hands to rub the medium into the fabric. Once it is well soaked through you may need to wring it out somewhat to remove and excess. Then you are ready to work with your fabric and arrange it into the shape that you want.

Note: Put on some gloves if you don’t want to end up with inky hands.

I soaked some lace in the mixture, then wound it around the frame I had made until I had a flat layer covering all of the wire skirt. Then I added another layer of lace on top, which I shaped into small pleats and frills. You can add a little more sculpting medium on top of the fabric as you go to make sure it holds in place. I then wound a layer of the same soaked lace around the upper body of the mannequin to create the top half of its dress.

Next take some threads of yarn and soak them in the same mixture of black gesso and sculpture medium before arranging them on your mannequin’s head to give her some hair. Twist this around on itself and arrange it so that is falls down her back and shoulders. I then soaked a small piece of gauze in the mixture and tied it around the mannequin’s face, like a blindfold. You might choose to accessorise or decorate your mannequin in a different way.

Step 4

Use your coloured paints to apply a partial layer of paint to the mannequin. This colour on top of the black base will create a beautiful shaded effect. Choose colours that will merge into each other on your figure, including all parts of the mannequin and its stand.

Étape 1 - Appliquez une couche de Gesso noir sur le mannequin et son support, puis séchez avec le pistolet à chaleur.

Étape 2 - Coupez une section de grillage à la taille voulue et utilisez-le pour créer la structure qui constituera la jupe que vous mettrez sur votre mannequin.

Étape 3 - Pendant cette étape, vous allez « habiller » votre mannequin. Commencez par mélanger du solidifiant pour tissu avec un peu de gesso noir dans un bol assez grand.

Le solidifiant pour tissu est un médium à base d'eau qui peut être utilisé pour rendre les tissus rigides et durs afin qu'ils gardent leur forme une fois sec. Si vous voulez l'utiliser avec un petit morceau de tissu, vous pouvez directement appliquer une quantité généreuse de produit sur la surface, en utilisant une grande brosse. Vous devez vous assurer que vous utilisez assez de médium pour imbiber complétement le tissu. Si vous voulez travailler avec de plus grands morceaux, trempez entièrement la pièce dans un récipient pendant quelques minutes et utilisez vos mains pour imbiber le tissu. Une fois qu'il est bien imprégné, vous devrez peut-être le tordre un peu pour enlever l'excèdent. Ensuite, vous serez prêt à travailler votre tissu et à construire la forme que vous voulez.

Note: Mettez des gants si vous ne voulez pas finir avec les mains noires.

J'ai trempé un peu de dentelle dans le mélange, puis je l’ai « sculpté » autour du cadre en grillage jusqu'à ce que j'obtienne une couche plate couvrant toute la jupe. Ensuite, j'ai ajouté une autre couche de dentelle sur le dessus, que j'ai façonnée en petits plis et fioritures. Vous pouvez ajouter un peu plus de médium sur le dessus du tissu pour vous assurer qu'il tient bien en place. J'ai ensuite enroulé une couche de la même dentelle imbibée de produit autour du haut du corps du mannequin pour créer la moitié supérieure de sa robe.

Ensuite, prenez quelques fils et trempez-les dans le même mélange de gesso noir et de solidifiant tissu avant de les arranger autour de la tête de votre mannequin pour lui créer quelques cheveux. Enroulez-les sur eux-mêmes et arrangez de sorte à ce que cela tombe dans le dos et sur les épaules. J'ai ensuite trempé un petit morceau de gaze dans le mélange et l'ai attaché autour du visage du mannequin, comme un bandeau. Vous pouvez choisir d'accessoiriser ou de décorer votre mannequin d'une manière différente.

Étape 4 - Utilisez vos peintures colorées pour en appliquer une couche partielle sur le mannequin. La couleur, sur la base noire, créera un bel effet ombragé. Choisissez des couleurs qui fusionneront les unes avec les autres sur votre silhouette, y compris sur toutes les parties du mannequin et de son support.
